Grizedale Duathlon Winner Grizedale Grizedale

The first ever Grizedale Duathlon held on Sunday 14th March got off to a great start when despite the forecast the weather was fine and sunny. Based at Grizedale Forest Park visitor centre, near Hawkshead the event is completely off road and lived up to the 'challenging events, stunning locations' philosophy. 83 competitors lined up for the mass start and were faced with an initial 6.5k trail run climbing to the summit of Carron Crag, which at 1034’ is the highest point in the forest. This was followed by a tough 24k off road bike route which incorporated the full North Face mountain bike trail & is graded as a ‘Red’ route featuring technical rocky sections, switchbacks, berms & boardwalks. Competitors were then faced with the same run route as the first back up to Carron Crag, with the stunning panoramic views of the Lakeland fells helping to restore any flagging energy levels. From there it was a steady descent back through the forest and to the finish.

First to cross the finish line in a time of 2 hours and 4 minutes after leading from the start was Julian Hatcher from Bristol, (pictured) who first words on finishing were "that was certainly not a Micky Mouse course". It’s good to know that he found it tough after making it look so effortless! Second place went to male veteran Paul Drinkwater from ukmtb Tri in 2 hours 13 min and third place and first local from Satterthwaite was Steven Brennan in a time of 2:13:13. Nineteen year old Joseph Cox put in a solid performance to finish 4th overall. First female was Hannah Phillips from Darlington Tri who stormed round in an impressive 2 hours 35 min. and finishing 15th overall. Local lady Rennal Brennan from Satterthwaite also had a good race to be the first veteran female & second female overall in a time of 2 hours 43 min.

Relay pair Jean Claude and Helen Van Der Vaken had an excellent time of 2 hours 29 mins. Helen did both run legs, Jean Claude did the bike section and said it was great to compete in a race together where they could both do their strongest discipline.

In the M70 category Allan Bourne from Stoke on Trent finished in an incredible 3:54:51. Entering the event only the week before Allan commented that he was looking for something to provide him with a challenge! Paul Noble from Grizedale Bikes who finished 22nd overall commented that it was a really testing course with a good mixture of terrain and found it very challenging even after climbing Mount Everest last year.

Well done to all competitors, it certainly wasn't an easy course! Feedback has been great from both newcomers to the sport & from seasoned athletes. A big thank you to the Forestry Commission for their support and assistance and also to Grizedale Bikes for their support and generous prize donations.

The Whinlatter Duathlon 15 November 2009

The Whinlatter Off Road Duathlon on the 15th November 2009 kicked off to a great start, despite the rain it was a resounding success. We had a great turn out for this new event, with 165 starters on the day. The feedback from competitors has been fantastic, with most people enjoying the tough, challenging course in this spectacular location.

The race itself was the standard run/bike/run format but the distances may have been deceptive as the route involved nearly 4,000’ of climbing. The first run was a tough 5.5km circuit climbing up to Seat How summit (496m) involving steep sections of singletrack & forest trails, before descending back towards the transition area. The MTB route was a 15km circuit incorporating the full North Loop of the new Altura trails. This is graded as a Red route and included something for everyone, some steep climbs, tricky technical sections over wet rock and roots and speedy descents. Back to transition and out on foot again, the second run was a reversal of the first.

Biker

The Solo Mens race was won by international fell runner Ricky Lightfoot of Saab Salomon who stormed round in a fantastic time of 1:43:12 despite it being his first duathlon and puncturing at the start of the bike leg! The ladies race was won by local rider Rachael Lawrance, closely followed by Angela Brand-Barker who was also first female vet >40. The relay category was won by Chris Steele and Phil Davies of Cyclewise who also got the fastest time of the day; 1:35:38. For full results visit www.whinlatterduathlon.co.uk

Feedback from the competitors has been fantastic with most thoroughly enjoying this tough and challenging event. Many have vowed to come back again next year for more punishment!

‘..thanks for a well organised event today - there was a good atmosphere at the start and finish and all the marshalls did a good job in the rain’.

‘This was my 377th event and is amongst various marathons etc one of the hardest I can recall. The organisation was superb, the route was excellent...I hope you are able to develop this as a regular event’
